Meet Astha S.: Advocating for a Sustainable Future

Hometown: Naperville, Illinois

Competition Host(s): Joliet Chamber of Commerce and Illinois Chamber of Commerce

Essay Topic: Environmental Advocacy

Astha S. is passionate about speaking up on issues that impact both her community and future generations. For her National Civics Bee® essay, she focused on Environmental Advocacy, examining how local decisions affect environmental sustainability and encouraging residents to take an active role in shaping their community’s future.

A student who enjoys social studies, Astha is inspired by Abraham Lincoln and his commitment to leadership, perseverance, and public service. Her personal hero is Greta Thunberg, whose advocacy demonstrates the impact young people can have when they stand up for causes they believe in.

When she’s not studying or exploring civic issues, Astha enjoys competing in cross country. This year, she achieved an impressive milestone by completing her first half marathon and finishing second in her age group, a reflection of the dedication and determination she brings to everything she does.

Looking ahead, Astha hopes to become a lawyer, using her passion for civic issues, critical thinking, and advocacy to help others and make a difference in her community.

The National Civics Bee celebrates students like Astha who are using thoughtful civic engagement, leadership, and perseverance to help shape a brighter future. We are proud to recognize her as an Illinois State Finalist.
