Hometown: Lyle, Washington
Competition Host(s): Greater Vancouver Chamber and AWB Institute
Essay Topic: Wildfire Preparedness

Calista C. is passionate about protecting her community and helping others stay safe during emergencies. For her National Civics Bee® essay, she focused on wildfire preparedness, an important issue for communities across Washington and the western United States. Through her research, Calista explored ways communities can better prepare for and respond to wildfire risks.
When she’s not thinking about solutions to community challenges, Calista enjoys spending time with the Civil Air Patrol, an organization that develops leadership skills, teaches aerospace education, and encourages community service. She also takes pride in being bilingual, a skill that helps her connect with a wider range of people and perspectives.
A fan of history, Calista’s favorite historical figure is Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. She also draws inspiration from her personal hero, her grandfather, Paul Telfer, whose influence has helped shape her interests and goals.
Looking ahead, Calista has an exciting dream job in mind: becoming an AT-802F Fire Boss pilot, flying specialized aircraft that help combat wildfires and protect communities from danger. Her passion for service, leadership, and public safety already reflects the qualities that make great civic leaders.
When she’s not studying history or participating in Civil Air Patrol activities, Calista enjoys a plate of her favorite food, lasagna.
The National Civics Bee celebrates students like Calista who are committed to strengthening their communities through leadership, learning, and civic engagement. We are proud to recognize her as a Washington State Finalist.
