Meet Carolyn T.: Supporting Small Businesses and Strong Communities
Hometown: Ann Arbor, Michigan
Competition Host(s): Canton Chamber of Commerce and Michigan Chamber Foundation
Essay Topic: Small Business

Carolyn T. is passionate about helping local businesses thrive and strengthening the communities they serve. For her National Civics Bee® essay, she focused on small business, exploring the challenges entrepreneurs face and identifying ways communities can help create an environment where small businesses can succeed and grow.
A student who enjoys both math and history, Carolyn is inspired by Frances Perkins, the first woman to serve in a U.S. presidential cabinet and a champion for workers’ rights and social reform. Her personal hero is her grandmother, Lucille T., who served as chief legal counsel to the Governor of Michigan for 12 years. Carolyn credits her grandmother’s leadership and dedication to public service as a source of inspiration for her own civic interests.
When she’s not studying or exploring civic issues, Carolyn enjoys playing the harp, combining creativity, discipline, and artistry through music. She also values opportunities to learn from people and cultures around the world. One of her most memorable experiences has been participating in an international youth exchange, which broadened her perspective and strengthened her appreciation for global connections.
Looking ahead, Carolyn hopes to become a U.S. Senator, where she can help shape public policy and advocate for solutions that strengthen communities and create opportunities for others.
The National Civics Bee celebrates students like Carolyn who are using their leadership, curiosity, and civic engagement to make a positive impact in their communities. We are proud to recognize her as a Michigan State Finalist.
