Meet Jay K.: Creating Safe Spaces Where Every Voice Matters

Hometown: Auburn, Alabama

Competition Host(s): Opelika Chamber and Alabama Chambers

Essay Topic: Respect: Creating a Safe Space for Every Voice

Jay K. believes that every person deserves to be heard and respected. For his National Civics Bee® essay, he focused on creating safe spaces where every voice matters, exploring how communities can foster respect, understanding, and inclusion so that everyone feels valued and empowered to participate.

When he’s not thinking about ways to strengthen his community, Jay stays busy pursuing a wide range of interests. He enjoys playing the clarinet, competing in tennis, and participating in musical theatre. In fact, he can go from performing a Mozart piece on the clarinet to competing on the tennis court, and he has even taken the stage as Sebastian in a musical.

A lover of history, Jay’s favorite historical figure is Abraham Lincoln, whose leadership and commitment to unity continue to inspire people today. His personal heroes are his parents, who have made many sacrifices to provide opportunities for him and who continually encourage him to challenge himself and strive for excellence.

Looking ahead, Jay hopes to become a psychiatrist, combining his interest in helping others with a desire to support mental health and well-being.

When he’s not studying, practicing music, performing, or playing sports, Jay enjoys one of his favorite meals: homemade barbecue.

The National Civics Bee celebrates students like Jay who are using their voices, ideas, and leadership to strengthen their communities. We are proud to recognize him as an Alabama State Finalist.
