Meet Justus A.: Tackling Housing Challenges Through Civic Action

Hometown: Baxter, Minnesota

Competition Host(s): Brainerd Lakes Chamber of Commerce and YMCA Center for Youth Voice

Essay Topic: Homelessness

Justus A. is passionate about addressing the challenges that affect people’s everyday lives. For his National Civics Bee® essay, he focused on homelessness, exploring ways communities can work together to create solutions that provide stability, opportunity, and support for those in need.

A student who excels in math, Justus is inspired by Benjamin Franklin, whose curiosity, innovation, and public service helped shape the nation. His personal hero is Katherine Johnson, the pioneering mathematician whose groundbreaking work helped advance space exploration and opened doors for future generations in STEM fields.

When he’s not studying or exploring civic issues, Justus enjoys playing tennis and pursuing entrepreneurial ventures. At just 13 years old, he started a 3D printing business with his younger brother, combining creativity, problem-solving, and business skills to bring ideas to life. This experience has helped him develop the innovative mindset that fuels both his academic and civic interests.

Looking ahead, Justus hopes to become an environmental engineer, applying science and technology to help solve some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.

The National Civics Bee celebrates students like Justus who are using leadership, innovation, and civic engagement to create positive change in their communities. We are proud to recognize him as a Minnesota State Finalist.
