Essay Topic: Detainment

Keyla L. is passionate about ensuring that people are treated with dignity, respect, and compassion. For her National Civics Bee® essay, she focused on detainment, exploring ways communities and policymakers can foster greater understanding, fairness, and support for individuals and families navigating the immigration system.

When she’s not thinking about solutions to important civic challenges, Keyla enjoys playing soccer and spending time with family and friends. She also shares a simple fun fact about herself: her favorite color is blue.

A fan of math, Keyla enjoys problem-solving and tackling complex challenges. Her favorite historical figure is Alexander Hamilton, whose determination and contributions helped shape the foundation of the United States. Her personal hero is her cousin, whose support and example have inspired her to pursue her goals and make a positive impact in her community.

Looking ahead, Keyla hopes to become a lawyer, combining her passion for advocacy, critical thinking, and public service to help others and make a difference in people’s lives.

When she’s not studying, playing soccer, or exploring civic issues, Keyla enjoys one of her favorite meals: lomo saltado, a traditional Peruvian dish known for its rich flavors and cultural significance.

The National Civics Bee celebrates students like Keyla who are using their voices, ideas, and leadership to address important issues in their communities. We are proud to recognize her as a Washington, D.C., Finalist.
