Hometown: Las Cruces, New Mexico
Competition Host(s): The Bridge of Southern New Mexico and New Mexico Chamber of Commerce Foundation
Essay Topic: Youth Violence

Marcus L. is passionate about helping young people build stronger relationships and safer communities. For his National Civics Bee® essay, he focused on Youth Violence, exploring how students can play an active role in resolving conflicts, fostering understanding, and preventing violence among their peers.
When he’s not thinking about ways to strengthen his community, Marcus enjoys spending time on the basketball court and taking on new challenges. He also has a unique talent that always gets a reaction: he can roll his tongue into the shape of a taco.
A fan of history, Marcus admires Michael Jordan for his leadership, determination, and commitment to excellence. His greatest inspirations, however, are his mom, dad, and younger brother, whose love and support encourage him to work hard and pursue his goals.
Looking ahead, Marcus hopes to become a mergers and acquisitions lawyer, combining his interest in problem-solving, negotiation, and leadership to help organizations navigate important decisions and opportunities.
When he’s not studying, playing basketball, or exploring civic issues, Marcus enjoys one of his favorite foods: fried chicken.
The National Civics Bee celebrates students like Marcus who are using their voices, ideas, and leadership to address important challenges in their communities. We are proud to recognize him as a New Mexico State Finalist.
