Hometown: Harpswell, Maine

Competition Host(s): Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce

Essay Topic: Community Education

Marin L. is passionate about improving educational opportunities for students in her community. For her National Civics Bee® essay, she examined Community Education, exploring how communities can address the challenges and opportunities associated with maintaining strong learning environments while meeting the evolving needs of students and families.

A student who enjoys English, Marin loves reading, writing, and exploring new ideas through literature. Her favorite historical figure is Margaret Chase Smith, the trailblazing Maine senator known for her courage, independence, and commitment to public service. Smith’s leadership and dedication continue to inspire Marin’s interest in civic engagement and community impact.

When she’s not studying or exploring civic issues, Marin enjoys a variety of activities, including theatre, skiing, and swimming. In fact, she has been skiing since she was just two and a half years old, a fun fact that highlights her lifelong love of the outdoors and adventure.

Looking ahead, Marin hopes to become a college professor, a career that would allow her to share knowledge, inspire future generations, and continue exploring the subjects she is passionate about.

When it’s time to enjoy a favorite comfort food, Marin chooses a classic: mashed potatoes.

The National Civics Bee celebrates students like Marin who are using thoughtful civic engagement, creativity, and leadership to strengthen their communities. We are proud to recognize her as a Maine State Finalist.
