Meet Maris G. : Finding Solutions to Homelessness Through Civic Leadership

Hometown: Lexington, Kentucky

Competition Host(s): Bardstown-Nelson County Chamber of Commerce and Kentucky Chamber Foundation

Essay Topic: Homelessness

Maris G. is passionate about helping communities support those facing difficult challenges. For her National Civics Bee® essay, she focused on homelessness, exploring ways communities can work together to provide resources, stability, and opportunities for individuals and families in need.

When she’s not thinking about solutions to community issues, Maris enjoys a variety of creative activities. She participates in aerial silks, a discipline that combines strength, artistry, and athleticism, and she is actively involved in yearbook, helping document important memories and experiences for her school community.

A fan of social studies, Maris is fascinated by people, cultures, and history. Her favorite historical figure is Anne Boleyn, whose story continues to captivate students of history around the world. She also admires Dolly Parton, whom she considers a personal hero for her generosity, philanthropy, and commitment to helping others.

Looking ahead, Maris hopes to become an anthropologist, combining her curiosity about people and cultures with a desire to better understand the world and the communities that shape it.

When she’s not studying, participating in extracurricular activities, or exploring civic issues, Maris enjoys one of her favorite treats: cookies and cream ice cream.

The National Civics Bee celebrates students like Maris who are using their voices, ideas, and leadership to strengthen their communities. We are proud to recognize her as a Kentucky State Finalist.
