Hometown: Moville, Iowa

Competition Host(s): Siouxland Chamber of Commerce and Iowa Chamber Alliance

Essay Topic: Legislative Accountability and Voting Flexibility

Michael O. believes that strong communities depend on active, informed citizens and a government that remains accountable to the people it serves. For his National Civics Bee® essay, he focused on legislative accountability and voting flexibility, exploring ways to strengthen citizen participation and ensure that more voices are represented in the democratic process.

A passionate student of social studies, Michael is inspired by Eleanor Roosevelt, whose leadership, advocacy, and commitment to public service left a lasting impact on American history. Closer to home, Michael’s personal hero is his brother, Noah, whose support, encouragement, and example motivate him every day.

Michael also has a unique connection to American history. He is related to Warren G. Harding, the 29th President of the United States, a family connection that has deepened his interest in civic leadership and government.

When he’s not studying or exploring civic issues, Michael enjoys hiking and spending time outdoors. Whether he’s on a trail or learning about government and history, he appreciates opportunities to explore, learn, and challenge himself.

Looking ahead, Michael hopes to become a Supreme Court Justice, combining his passion for civics, fairness, and thoughtful decision-making to serve the public and make a meaningful difference in society.

The National Civics Bee celebrates students like Michael who are using their curiosity, civic awareness, and leadership to help shape the future of our democracy. We are proud to recognize him as an Iowa State Finalist.
