Meet Mya B.: Exploring Community Impact Through Civic Engagement
Hometown: Grand Island, Nebraska
Competition Host(s): Kearney Area Chamber of Commerce and Nebraska Chamber Foundation
Essay Topic: Nebraskan Crisis

Mya B. is passionate about understanding how major community changes affect the lives of local residents. For her National Civics Bee® essay, she focused on the Nebraskan Crisis, examining the ripple effects that business and economic decisions can have on workers, families, and communities.
A student who enjoys English, Mya is inspired by Diana, Princess of Wales, for her compassion, advocacy, and commitment to helping others. Her personal hero is her oldest sister, Bella, whose guidance and support have had a lasting influence on her life.
When she’s not studying or exploring civic issues, Mya expresses her creativity and energy through dance, an activity she enjoys as both a hobby and a way to connect with others. She also has a unique fun fact: her two thumbs are different sizes, a detail that always sparks conversation.
Looking ahead, Mya hopes to become a psychiatrist, combining her desire to help people with an interest in supporting mental health and well-being.
The National Civics Bee celebrates students like Mya who are paying attention to the issues affecting their communities and exploring thoughtful solutions that create positive change. We are proud to recognize her as a Nebraska State Finalist.
