Hometown: Little Compton, Rhode Island
Competition Host(s): East Greenwich Chamber of Commerce
Essay Topic: Mental Health

Sam M. is passionate about ensuring that young people receive the support and resources they need to thrive. For his National Civics Bee® essay, he focused on mental health, exploring ways communities can better support children and teens facing unique challenges and help improve access to mental health services.
A student who enjoys math, Sam likes solving problems and thinking critically about complex issues. His favorite historical figure is Bill Russell, whose leadership, determination, and commitment to making a difference extended far beyond the basketball court. Sam’s personal hero is his dad, whose guidance, encouragement, and example have played an important role in shaping his goals and values.
When he’s not studying or exploring civic issues, Sam enjoys playing basketball and staying active with friends and family. He also shares a unique connection to American history: he is related to Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers whose contributions helped shape the nation.
Looking ahead, Sam hopes to become an attorney, combining his interest in advocacy, problem-solving, and public service to help others and make a positive impact in his community.
When it’s time to enjoy a favorite meal, Sam chooses pasta, a classic favorite.
The National Civics Bee celebrates students like Sam who are using their voices, ideas, and leadership to address important issues in their communities. We are proud to recognize him as a Rhode Island State Finalist.
