Competition Host(s): Chelsea Chamber of Commerce and Adams Presidential Center
Essay Topic: Lanternfly Infestation

Shelby S. is passionate about protecting the environment and preserving local ecosystems through civic action and community awareness. For her National Civics Bee® essay, she focused on the challenge of the lanternfly infestation, exploring ways communities can respond to the spread of this invasive species and minimize its impact on local agriculture, businesses, and natural habitats. Her work reflects a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and the role citizens can play in addressing community challenges.
A student who enjoys World History, Shelby loves learning about the people, events, and ideas that have shaped societies around the globe. Her favorite historical figure is Thomas Paine, whose influential writings helped advance the cause of American independence and encouraged civic participation. As her personal hero, Shelby chose Malala Yousafzai, whose courage and advocacy for education have inspired millions around the world.
When she’s not studying or exploring civic issues, Shelby stays busy with theater and debate, activities that allow her to express her creativity, strengthen her public speaking skills, and engage with new ideas. She also has an impressive creative talent: she makes her own cosplay costumes from scratch, combining artistic vision, craftsmanship, and attention to detail to bring characters to life.
Looking ahead, Shelby hopes to become a history professor, a career that would allow her to share her love of learning, inspire students, and help others better understand the events that have shaped our world.
When it comes to snacks, Shelby’s favorite treat is yogurt-covered pretzels, offering the perfect blend of sweet and salty flavors.
The National Civics Bee celebrates students like Shelby who are using their creativity, curiosity, and civic leadership to make a positive impact in their communities. We are proud to recognize her as a Massachusetts State Finalist.
