Essay Topic: Hazardous Waste Disposal

Shyla J. is passionate about finding solutions to environmental issues that affect communities every day. For her National Civics Bee® essay, she focused on hazardous waste disposal, exploring ways communities can safely manage waste and protect public health and the environment.

When she’s not thinking about solutions to community challenges, Shyla enjoys expressing her creativity through writing. One of her favorite activities is creating dual point-of-view stories with her friends, collaborating to bring characters and ideas to life from multiple perspectives.

A fan of social studies, Shyla’s favorite historical figure is Helen Keller, whose determination and perseverance continue to inspire people around the world. She also looks up to her aunt, whom she considers her personal hero for her guidance, support, and encouragement.

Looking ahead, Shyla hopes to pursue a career in finance, combining her analytical skills and interest in solving complex problems to make a meaningful impact.

When she’s not studying, writing, or competing in track and cross country, Shyla enjoys one of her favorite foods: pizza.

The National Civics Bee celebrates students like Shyla who are using their voices, ideas, and leadership to address important issues in their communities. We are proud to recognize her as a Tennessee State Finalist.
