Essay Topic: A Special Needs Facility for Aging and Preschool-Age Individuals

Skylar W. is passionate about creating opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to thrive. For her National Civics Bee® essay, she focused on the idea of a special needs facility for aging and preschool-age individuals, exploring ways communities can better support individuals with unique needs while fostering meaningful connections across generations.

When she’s not thinking about ways to strengthen her community, Skylar enjoys staying involved in her local 4-H Club, where she develops leadership skills, serves her community, and connects with others who share her interests. She is also proud to have been named the first New Albany Little Miss Hospitality in 2020, a special honor that reflects her love for her hometown and community involvement.

A fan of history, Skylar’s favorite historical figure is Jesus Christ, whose teachings continue to inspire people around the world. Her personal hero is her great-grandmother, Tommie Jordan, whose example, wisdom, and influence have helped shape Skylar’s values and goals.

Looking ahead, Skylar hopes to become an attorney, combining her passion for helping others with a desire to advocate for people and make a positive difference in her community.

When she’s not studying, participating in 4-H activities, or exploring civic issues, Skylar enjoys one of her favorite meals: chicken and dressing.

The National Civics Bee celebrates students like Skylar who are using their voices, ideas, and leadership to strengthen their communities. We are proud to recognize her as a Mississippi State Finalist.
