Meet Sterling R.: Turning Community Service into Civic Action

Hometown: Rutland, Vermont

Competition Host(s): Addison Chamber of Commerce and Vermont Chamber of Commerce

Essay Topic: Snow Shoveling

Sterling R. is passionate about helping neighbors and strengthening communities through service. For his National Civics Bee® essay, he focused on snow shoveling, exploring how young people can work together to support older adults, individuals with disabilities, and others who may need assistance during Vermont’s snowy winters.

A student who enjoys social studies, Sterling is inspired by William O. Douglas, the longtime U.S. Supreme Court justice known for his independent thinking and commitment to individual rights. His personal hero is Jeff, his UPS driver, whose kindness and positive attitude have made a lasting impression on him.

When he’s not studying or exploring civic issues, Sterling enjoys soccer, baseball, and reading. He also shares a fun fact about himself: he once ate a foot-long hot dog, an accomplishment that’s hard to forget.

Looking ahead, Sterling dreams of becoming either an astronaut or a doctor, combining his curiosity, ambition, and desire to help others in whichever path he chooses.

When it’s time to enjoy a favorite meal, Sterling chooses pizza, a classic favorite.

The National Civics Bee celebrates students like Sterling who are using their creativity, leadership, and commitment to service to make a positive impact in their communities. We are proud to recognize him as a Vermont State Finalist.
