Hometown: Hockessin, Delaware

Competition Host(s): Delaware Center for Civics Education, University of Delaware

Essay Topic: Social Equity

Tab W. is passionate about helping students feel connected, supported, and welcomed in their communities. For his National Civics Bee® essay, he focused on social equity, exploring ways to help newcomers build connections, access resources, and fully participate in school life. His essay highlights the important role schools play in fostering belonging and creating opportunities for all students to succeed.

A fan of science, Tab enjoys learning about how the world works and discovering new ideas through observation and experimentation. His favorite historical figure is Abraham Lincoln, whose leadership, perseverance, and commitment to unity left a lasting impact on the nation. Tab also credits his grandpa as his personal hero, recognizing the guidance, wisdom, and support he has received from him.

When he’s not studying or exploring civic issues, Tab is actively involved in speech and debate, an activity that has strengthened his communication skills, confidence, and ability to thoughtfully discuss important issues. He also enjoys sharing a fun fact about himself: bananas are naturally radioactive because of the potassium they contain.

Looking ahead, Tab hopes to become a corporate lawyer, a career that would allow him to combine critical thinking, persuasive communication, and problem-solving skills to make an impact in the business world.

When it comes to food, Tab’s favorite meal is sushi, which he enjoys for its variety and flavor.

The National Civics Bee celebrates students like Tab who are using their voices, ideas, and leadership to create stronger, more welcoming communities. We are proud to recognize him as a Delaware State Finalist.
