National Civics Bee® In Brownsville, Texas
Out of more than 400 local middle schools in the state of Texas, ten finalists were chosen to compete in the National Civics Bee®, hosted on May 11, 2022 by the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce. Teachers, family members, friends, and other members of the community gathered to watch the finalists showcase their knowledge of civics and the importance of civic engagement within one’s community.
The finalists submitted 500-word essays on how to use civics to solve community issues. Of the 426 essay entries, ten finalists emerged to take the stage for the National Civics Bee® in Brownsville, Texas.
In the final round of the National Civics Bee®, the top finalists shared a summary of their essay and answered follow up questions from the judges. The panel of judges included Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr., District 27; Marina Zolezzi, Chief of Staff, City of Brownsville; and Aaron Cox, Executive Director of the American Cancer Society.
Congratulations to Jared and Seanah on winning first and second place prizes, respectively, and to Christopher and Emilia who tied for third.
