Oregon’s Civics Cadet

How can a passion for civics and a knack for problem-solving lead to statewide recognition? For Thomas, an Oregon student, the National Civics Bee® became the stage where his dedication and innovative thinking shone brightest.
Thomas’s journey began when his mom heard about the National Civics Bee® from a friend. For a young man who had “loved civics for a very long time,” this competition was an irresistible opportunity. “History has been my favorite subject for almost my entire life,” Thomas shared with enthusiasm.
Thomas didn’t just bring knowledge to the table though, he brought solutions. His essay focused on saving a library in Kaiser, Oregon by switching from community to public funding. Not only did the essay demonstrate Thomas’ nuanced civic understanding, but also drew on his longtime appreciation for libraries.
Where other students might have solely hit the books, Thomas took a multifaceted approach to preparing for the competition. Yes, he devoured books about civics, but he also dove into Supreme Court cases – a topic he admits he initially wasn’t “too jazzed about.” His secret weapon? Videoing himself repeatedly, fine-tuning his presentation skills with each take.
The Oregon State Finals, hosted by Oregon Business & Industry, was the first test for Thomas’s extensive preparation and skills. After missing multiple questions during round one, Thomas felt the stakes of the competition rise. “My heart was racing,” he remembered. “I had to get almost perfect during round two, or I’m not going to be moving up.”
But as fate, and a great deal of practice, would have it, Thomas emerged out of the next round in second place overall.
As the final round approached, Thomas felt a mix of nerves and determination. A podium finish was within grasp, but the pressure was still on. He delivered his presentation, answered questions, and waited for the announcement: Thomas M. was the Oregon State Finals champion.
“It was really a feeling I can’t begin to describe,” the winner reflected. “I was just amazed.”
Thomas’s victory is more than just a personal triumph; it is a beacon of inspiration for young people everywhere. His journey displays how a passion for government and community can flourish, especially at a young age.
Beyond the National Civics Bee®, Thomas’s civic engagement extends to his role as a Cadet Chief Master Sergeant in the Civil Air Patrol. Leading a group of 20 cadets, he credits this experience with honing his leadership skills and public speaking confidence. “It’s really helped me with my memory and accountability,” he notes, drawing a clear connection between his extracurricular activities and his National Civics Bee® success.
Looking ahead, Thomas is excited about the National Championship in Washington D.C., but not just for the chance to compete. He is thrilled at the prospect of meeting like-minded peers. “It’s going to be really amazing to meet all these people from across the country who also love civics,” Thomas told us.
As he considers a future in law, Thomas’s experience with the National Civics Bee® has solidified his path toward continued civic engagement and leadership. His journey to Oregon’s champion demonstrates that with passion, preparation, and perseverance, one young voice can make a difference.
